Our Common Interest Groups and Region VI

Region VI of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) proudly supports the diverse needs of its members through Common Interest Groups (CIGs), ensuring that all professionals have a platform to collaborate, share knowledge, and advance safety practices. These groups focus on key topics and communities within the safety profession, providing targeted resources and networking opportunities.

CIGs within Region VI are designed to foster inclusivity and give voice to the unique challenges faced by various groups. Whether you’re passionate about improving workplace safety for women in the field, advancing safety through technology, or advocating for global safety standards, Region VI’s CIGs offer a dynamic environment where members can engage and lead change.

“Our Common Interest Groups help us tap into the rich diversity of our membership,” says Julian Mercer, Region VI Assistant Regional Vice President - Common Interest Groups and Practice Specialties. “By addressing specific interests, we can better support our members’ professional growth and elevate safety practices across all industries.”

🛎️How to Get Involved

Getting involved with a CIG is easy. Simply visit https://www.assp.org/membership/communities/common-interest-groups/ to explore the groups available and find one that matches your interests. Participation provides access to exclusive resources, networking events, and leadership opportunities, allowing you to contribute meaningfully to the safety profession.

There are different common interest groups and open to all ASSP members — it is not exclusive to those who share a particular identity. Here are our CIGs today:

  • Blacks in Safety Excellence (BISE): Advances all people of color in the OSH profession through professional development, networking, collaboration and education.

  • Women in Safety Excellence (WISE): Addresses issues specific to women OSH professionals — helping tackle the specific workplace and industry challenges that women face, in order to advance their careers and gain leadership positions within the OSH profession.

  • Hispanic Safety Professionals (HSP): Advances Hispanics and Latinos in the OSH profession through professional development, networking and collaboration.

  • Emerging Professionals in Occupational Safety and Health: Identifies, develops and connects young leaders who possess a passion to expand their knowledge and promote the OSH profession to sustain ASSP and advance the industry as a whole.

‼️The Importance of Greater Involvement

The greater your involvement in these Common Interest Groups, the more you can influence the future of safety and health practices. By engaging with your peers and contributing your unique perspectives, you help ensure that diverse voices are heard in shaping policies and standards that protect workers across all industries. Involvement also strengthens your professional network and equips you with the tools to lead change within your organization.
